Seeing Spots

4.06.2012

Opening Ceremony polka dot skirt (similar style here),
Thrifted green silk tee (similar look here),
H&M cropped windbreaker,
Vintage belt,
Vanessa Bruno clutch,
Jessica Simpson patent leather heels.

In the polka dots vs. stripes competition, stripes always come out on top for me. Having grown up just a short distance from the beach, I tend to gravitate towards all things nautical, and polka dots--when worn the wrong way--can sometimes come off as childish.

But when I saw this polka dot skirt hanging in Micol's closet, I knew it was time to give spots another chance. The volume of the skirt and its fuzzy texture make it such a fun addition to any outfit, so my biggest concern was how to craft a more mature look using this piece as a base.

I love the resulting look we came up with because it's fun and feminine, but not too girly-girly. The lightweight windbreaker gives the outfit more of a casual, street vibe, while the belt with gold hardware adds a little vintage edge.

So, where do you stand? Polka dots, or pass?

  6. I looove polka dots, I gravitate to them all the time. Which doesn't make sense because once you have one polka dot shirt you really won't find another one that's different then that, haha so redundant. But I fall into the trap every time. I didn't notice it was fuzzy, that's super cute. I really like how you paired all this up; I wouldn't have thought of it but you really did give it a casual/street vibe. Love the pictures too!

  7. Really love this look - That is a fantastic green, and the polka dot skirt is adorable! I think I'm with you on the stripes vs polka dots question. I definitely have waaay more stripes in my arsenal than I do polka dots, though I do enjoy them both, I think it's pretty clear which is the winner in my wardrobe :)
